The Future of Cross-Border Payments
In the latest episode of Looking Back Looking Forward, Douglas Arner explores the evolution and future of cross-border payments, drawing insights from his recent book with Dirk Zetzsche and Ross Buckley. Arner examines 50 years of payment innovations, highlighting how fast payment systems like UPI in India and Pix in Brazil have revolutionized domestic transactions globally. Despite these advances, cross-border payments still face high fees, outdated infrastructure, and other hurdles.
Arner discusses initiatives like Project Nexus and the rise of regulated stablecoins as promising solutions for retail cross-border payments, while projects like mBridge and Project Agora aim to transform wholesale transactions and foreign exchange. He predicts that advancing technology and regulatory changes will streamline currency trading, reduce costs, and improve global market efficiency in the coming years. Buckley, Anton Didenko, Zetzsche, and Arner wrote a paper published recently in the Boston University International Law Journal examining the role of technology in the evolution of the international monetary system.
